For the chicken, I used a combination of big and small pieces. The larger, dark-brown tesserae form the contour of the chicken and create a visual separation from the straw. The smaller tesserae in the interior give the impression of feathers.

The curves of the eggs create a contrast with the straight straw pieces. The difference between the light straw and the dark chicken is another strong contrast, which lets the chicken come forward.

This piece of glass is a darker value of blue. I used it for the sky because it lets the sky recede into the background, which gives a sense of distance and makes the foreground pop.
